More than just a local delicacy, Sarawak Laksa is a story in a bowl. It represents cultural diversity, history, and a unique blend of flavors that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Loved across Sarawak generations, Sarawak Laksa is a culinary masterpiece.

A "Great Melting Pot" in a Single Bowl

Sarawak is a land of incredible diversity, home to more than 34 distinct ethnic groups. This cultural tapestry is distilled into every spoonful of Laksa. The dish is a harmonious fusion of influences:

  • Chinese influence: Seen in the fine rice vermicelli noodles and preparation techniques.

  • Malay influence: Found in the aromatic spices and the pungent sambal.

  • Indigenous heritage: Reflected in the use of local herbs and unique flavor profiles from the Bornean rainforest.

The Anatomy of a Masterpiece

The heart of the dish is the broth (the soul), a rich, fragrant stock made from prawn shells and a paste containing over 20 secret ingredients, including lemongrass, galangal, candlenuts, and various spices.

A touch of coconut milk is added for body, ensuring it is creamy without masking the intricate spices. It is traditionally topped with fresh poached prawns, shredded chicken breast, thin strips of omelette, and bean sprouts. To complete the experience, you must add a squeeze of fresh calamansi lime and a dollop of sambal belacan for that essential kick.

From Local Secret to Global Icon

Once a humble street food, Sarawak Laksa has stepped onto the international stage. Through the “Celebrity Chef Effect” and government initiatives like the “Serumpun Sarawak” project, the dish is being showcased as high art on global platforms.

By involving international icons like Chef James Won and leveraging the enduring legacy of Anthony Bourdain, Sarawak is positioning its heritage ingredients as global contenders. Today, Kuching is proudly recognized by UNESCO as a “City of Gastronomy”.

The Laksa Lifestyle: Why it Matters for S-MM2H

Living in Sarawak means enjoying a high quality of life where affordability and authenticity go hand-in-hand; a world-class bowl of laksa typically costs less than RM10.

To truly live like a local, you must find your own "Laksa Spot"—whether it’s a suburban stall with gravy-like broth or a heritage shop with a lighter, aromatic version.

The best Sarawak Laksa is often found in:

  • Local kopitiams (coffee shops)

  • Hawker stalls

  • Small family-run eateries

Sarawak Laksa is for breakfast. Many of the best stalls are sold out by noon, as the "early bird gets the best broth".

"Heritage Cuisine is Diverse and Rich." Sarawak Laksa is the perfect ambassador for this richness.  if you want to truly understand Sarawak, you simply have to taste it. We invite you to take a seat at our table and experience a bowl full of history, identity, and pride.

And if you are considering the SMM2H programme, let Sarawak Laksa be your first introduction to the lifestyle that awaits you here.
